Sugarcubes

An ultra-modern Bauhaus-inspired project comprising a single-family home with an elegant laneway suite above a detached garage. We designed these homes for flexible, multi-generational living with rooms whose function and layout can be altered as the needs of the owners' family evolve. Both units take advantage of the sunny corner lot, with expansive windows opening up to the streetscape.

What was the brief?

• An ultra-modern Bauhaus-inspired single family home with a laneway suite above a detached garage.
•Designed for multi-generational living and additional rental revenue for the owner
• The primary home and suite are designed to work together as a cohesive architectural composition
• Privacy is ensured for occupants of house and suite by placing the large suite windows such that there's no overlooking the back yard of the main home.
• Access to the suite is from the street, not the alley, so it feels like a primary home rather than a laneway house.
• The main floor includes a guest suite for the owner's parents that is convertible to a dining room at the owner's discretion.
