Sundial House stands on a south facing slope, with a broad view across hills to Massanutten Peak and the Blue Ridge mountains beyond. On the west side, the house looks across a deep natural bowl to the nearby hardwood forest.
Sundial is composed of a “day house” on the south and a “night house” on the north with a full length two-story atrium between the two houses. The south facing glass wall integrates passive solar heating into the overall design of the house.
The functional layout, the choice of materials, the relationship to the site, and the quality of light and architectural space have been integrated to achieve a unique, comfortable dwelling with economical heating and cooling requirements.
