Surgical Department Addition and Lobby Renovation

Anderson Mikos Architects as Architects

Our client asked AMA to complete their Surgery Department and Lobby addition and renovation. The Vision Statement for the Surgical Expansion Project was “To create a state-of-the-art surgical environment that will facilitate the transformation of the surgical system resulting in outstanding experiences and outcomes for all stakeholders.”
The Project Guiding Principles included:
•Patient and employee safety first.
•Create an environment that optimizes the patient/family experience.
•Maximize operational efficiency and physician productivity.
•Provide flexibility for future growth and innovation.
•Support the integration of information technology and plan with future disruptive
technologies in mind.
•Have a philosophy of system wide standardization.
•Make decisions once.
Project components include:
•Surgery/endoscopy with associated support
•Day Surgery Unit
•Post-Anesthesia Care Unit
•New Main Entry Lobby
•Gift Shop
•Meditation Chapel
•Connectors to the existing ED, inpatient elevators and second floor, along with
the others
•New Penthouse to house new AHU's
•Expanded Conference and Education/Staff areas

The work was completed in a continuously active hospital environment, with the project being sequenced/ phased such that the existing facilities were still available for surgical procedures 24/7 during construction. Only one OR maximum was down at any one time. This was accomplished by careful phasing of the work with staff input. The project scope also encompassed site work, including sidewalks, driveways, parking, site utilities, site lighting and landscaping.
