A House Woven in Warm Winds: Southern Europe Meets the Indian Home
North Bangalore’s Surya Valencia, a 250-unit villa community, introduces a gentle proposition: a community shaped by the languid ease of Mediterranean living. At its centre sits the Spanish Villa, a home that translates the slow, sun-kissed charm of Spain for the Indian rhythm. The study of breezy courtyards, lime-washed textures also echoes cultural intersections. Building on such shared kinship, Sneha Ostawal’s design of the Spanish Villa blends arches, metal balustrades, and a muted olive exterior to respond to Bangalore’s climate. The result is not a stylistic transplant, but a home shaped by two cultures that instinctively understand one another.
Responding to limited ventilation, Sneha carved a triple-height foyer and living room crowned with twin skylights that flood the home with daylight. The gesture echoes a Spanish courtyard, bright yet shaded, cool yet inviting. Indoors, arches, wooden rafters, and rustic Pottery Barn chandeliers define the visual language. Working with the builder-provided beige flooring, the team layered walls in soft beige, pink, and olive, balanced with upholstery in deeper olives, burgundies, blues, and greys. Furniture, created with Magari, blends catalogue picks and custom pieces in wood, leather, cane, rope, and metal, lending a Mediterranean character grounded in Indian craftsmanship.
The house opens into a foyer where a slender metal railing wraps the staircase rising across three levels, while arches along the corridors frame views into the triple-height living room lit by a skylight. The living room centers on a U-shaped seating cluster oriented for conversation and toward the TV wall, which features paneling that breaks the scale so the height doesn’t overwhelm. The skylight casts shifting shadows through the day, illuminating the volume, as a Jaipur Rugs carpet anchors the floor. Adjacent is the single-height dining room, a compact space marked by twin arched cabinets with open shelves above shuttered crockery storage, reminiscent of traditional Mediterranean compositions.
The kitchen continues the thematic palette with muted green cabinetry, rustic handles, classic glass-front uppers, and Caesarstone counters. Calm in appearance yet highly functional, it features concealed appliances, distinct prep and cooking zones, and efficient circulation. It opens to a terracotta-tiled deck featuring a ceramic fountain pot, an outdoor moment, Mediterranean in spirit yet suited for Bangalore’s love for garden life.
On the first floor, an arched gallery overlooking the living atrium amplifies the home’s vertical openness. Two bedrooms sit at either end: a wooden-accented guest room with twin beds and landscape art, and a richer parent suite with a leather headboard, extended side tables, and oversized art. Both open to balconies paved in terracotta tiles, extending the Spanish theme outdoors and framing views of Bangalore’s greenery.
The top floor becomes a family retreat, with a lounge in deep green sectionals leading to the children’s room and the master suite. Carved in Stucco with niche shelves and rounded corners, the children’s room carries an earthy, handcrafted charm. Whereas the master suite features a four-post bed, a workspace, and a bathroom where a bathtub sits beneath a skylight, another Mediterranean cue. The next level opens to two terraces with distinct moods. The front terrace extends from a home office defined by a stucco arch, wooden desk, and cabinetry, opening out to a swing, fireplace, and armchairs that form a private nook. The second terrace serves as an open-air party zone with a long live-edge bar, terrazzo flooring, and lounge seating, kept minimal for easy maintenance during Bangalore’s monsoons.
The Spanish Villa’s success lies less in stylistic cues and more in cultural resonance. Mediterranean homes value community, fluid spaces, and multigenerational living, principles central to Indian life as well. Embracing this parallel, Source Architecture creates a home that is emotionally familiar yet visually fresh.
