The design of the new Snowroom forms part of the redevelopment of the sauna area at the Merano Thermal Baths, a wellness centre that has been in operation for around twenty years. The project expands the range of facilities on offer by dedicating an entire space to the cold, designed to support the body’s cooling-down phase following the heat of the sauna.
The space is arranged around sculptural walls made of layered blocks, whose irregular contours and the light evoke the silhouette of the Alps. Initially left exposed, the surfaces are gradually covered with real snow, generated by TechnoAlpin’s Snowroom systems, until the space is transformed into a snow-covered environment that can be explored barefoot.
An LED light strip runs along the walls in a continuous yet broken pattern, echoing the outline of the mountains. Above, a mirrored ceiling multiplies the reflections of the snow and light, amplifying the perception of space and the sense of immersion.
Next to the Snowroom, two SnowSky units, one in the spa area and one in the swimming pool lobby offer a shower experience featuring a real snowfall, with snow falling from the ceiling and settling on a small snowdrift in the centre of the space. The interiors play on the contrast between snow, dark finishes and metal, creating an environment where natural materials and technology combine to create an immersive experience centred on the cold.
