It is a 5-story building built on a 28.4m2 site in the center of Seoul. The name of the building is Column because it looks like a towering pillar. One space is located on each floor. Although it is small in size, it was designed with an independent office building in mind. The first floor was planned as a meeting space that also doubles as a take-out cafe, the second and third floors were planned as office space for employees, and the fourth and fifth floors were planned as spaces for more immersive work.

Sometimes you can take a break on the rooftop. In small lands, the shape of the building is often determined by the surrounding conditions. After calculating the given roads, buildings, and regulations, there is often little that the architect can decide. But before these conditions, the architect can make one choice.

You must decide whether to create a heterogeneous building that is completely different from its surroundings, or whether to design a harmonious building that matches its surroundings. The Column Building was designed with ‘harmony’ in mind. When considering the aesthetics of the city, choosing ‘harmony’ seemed to have many advantages.

A similar-sized narrow house is located right next to the site. Special attention was paid to the ‘harmony’ of the two buildings. The buildings were arranged and windows were planned to prevent interference with each other. The building was planned to ensure maximum privacy for each person. When choosing exterior colors, we planned to match each other.

Although they are different, independent buildings, it is clear that they will be perceived as one landscape. This is also my own suggestion to small buildings that will be built around us in the future. It contains the expectation of seeing small architectural complexes that are harmonious with each other even in the alleys of our country.
