The Highline Competition

A*PT Architecture (Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani) as Architects

All along the west side of Manhattan, from the meatpacking district up through Chelsea into Clinton, is a rare urban ruin; the highline elevated train line, long abandoned, which was originally built in the 1930’s to serve the freight and industrial needs of New York City’s West Side.

In assessing the needs of the neighborhood, we proposed a linear system of urban gardens above and of markets and social functions below, allowing the citizens of the neighborhoods to participate actively. This involvement will preserve the highline and weave the neighborhoods together:a perceived wedge will become a stitch.
