The Terraced House

Studio PKA as Architects

This home for one of India’s leading stock market gurus is a prized project for the PKA design team. Architect Puran Kumar let his personal connect with Mr. R.K.Damani guide in the design process. The result was a contemporary home spread over three floors with subtle traditional touches for this joint family of two brothers. This nearly 8,000 sq. ft penthouse takes up the top three floors of a 31-storey building where each floor has been designed in accordance with its specific role. The 29th floor is the family floor, the 30th floor has been designed as the guest floor with informal entrance to the kitchen and the utility and a terrace, and the top floor is the private floor of Mr. Damani with his den, a library and another terrace that overlooks the entire expanse of Altamount Road in South Mumbai, this being one of the tallest buildings in the area. The 29th floor is the private floor with all the bedrooms; the 30th floor is guest floor along with the family sitting and dining spaces and the kitchen; while the top floor has been designed as Mr. Damani’s personal den complete with the traditional Rajasthani elements. The staircase block, enclosed in glass, is a beautiful architectural composition that visually connects the 30th and 31st floors. This becomes especially interactive when the client is entertaining as guests move between the floors through the suspended staircase that can be seen through the glass. Initially done in 2004, The Terraced House, as it is christened owing to the large terraces that each floor enjoys, has been recently redone. In its new look, the penthouse maintains its essence of simplicity, though there are a few changes by way of fusion – blending the evolved personalities of the inmates with their current requirements for today along with the existing elements.
