Two Pavillions

Tom Robertson Architects as Architects

Two Pavilions is a contemporary home set within the rural landscape of Phillip Island. Replacing a much-loved holiday shack, the priority for the new design was to create a place multiple generations of a family could use together.

The design functions as a pair of pavilions, with elevations referencing the local architectural vernacular of a barn. These pavilions are connected by a central breezeway, which both creates privacy between spaces and presents a shaded area where families can come together, relax and share a meal.

In summer, the breezeway provides passive cooling. In winter, expanses of glass, oriented to views of the distant sea across the landscape, capture passive solar energy.

Robust interiors ensure the home withstands the demands of a large extended family with young children, while natural materials warm the grey-and-white colour palette. A timber ceiling above completes the experience of cosiness and contentment.
