The UBC Robson Square campus is a hidden gem in the midst of downtown Vancouver Tucked away from the chaos of the area, the campus is an academic oasis.
Throughout the gray and industrial structure of the campus, MP Lighting’s L195 pendant lights are placed in the center of the main entrance area and as decorative lights for stairs. The minimal, modern, and sleek design of the pendant adds a splash of elegance to the gray heaviness of the exposed concrete of the building.
On the stairs and ramp that take pedestrians to the campus, L01s are used to light up the walkway. The in-grade lights were mounted vertically on the steps to create a visual guide for walkers and wheelchair users to safely go through the Robson Square area without any physical obstruction. The Matte Chrome Anodized finish was selected for these in-grade fixtures to create a cohesive look with the concrete pathway.
Inside the UBC Robson Square campus, the bright-white ceilings with hidden linear lights widen the interior. The cove-like structure encases the linear fixtures and prevents uncomfortable glare in the waiting area. And between each aisle created by the cove structure, L195 pendant lights are hung asymmetrically to add a dynamic visual illusion. Thanks to the placement of the LED inside the pendant tube, there’s a soothing glow to illuminate the space without emitting glare that could potentially create visual discomfort for people sitting in the area. The Black Anodized finish of the L195 stands out from the crisp white of the ceiling while balancing out the stiff look of the cove structure thanks to the fixture’s slim design.
To the right of the waiting area are the two flights of stairs that take students, staff and visitors to other rooms. What makes the stairs stand out is the collection of pendant lights 195’s hung asymmetrically from the ceiling. In the empty space of the well hole, the long cords of different lengths create a waterfall-like structure to the cluster, adding charm to the space. From the lower level, the pendant fixtures add light to a small sitting area next to the stairs with warm illumination without glare.
For an industrial-style building like the UBC Robson Square campus, the delicate L195s are a wise choice to add sophistication and elegance. The simple design doesn’t compete with the unpolished aesthetic of the interior but rather enhances each other’s characteristics. The choice of the black anodized finish blends well with the whites and grays of the campus, while the slim shape of the luminaires adds just the right touch of delicacy to the structure.
