Modern, family-friendly house settles into neighbour hood with a surprise dual personality
How many homeowners buy in a neighbour hood they love but live in a house they want to demolish?
After living in the original house for over half a decade, our clients wanted their new house to maintain a family-focused design, and establish a closer connection with the outdoors so they could easily host friends from their nearby club. Entertaining guests either formally (with dinners for 14 people) or informally (with garden parties) was a common discussion point during the initial phase of this project. Even though it is a completely new build, the exterior takes on cues from the original structure, dating from the early 1960s, in order to fit seamlessly into the street scape. We applied a keep-it-simple concept to the floor plan.
Our clients love their new home, and say, “We can have 150 people here without logjams because it flows.” The plan uses two French doors at the rear of the house. One is visible from the front door so guests head toward it when they arrive. The other leads back into the kitchen. This circular flow allows the clients to have more guests when the weather is warm. Along with the focus on space to entertain we chose to separate the ‘private’ areas from the ‘public’ areas. The open floor plan is anchored with a spacious U-shaped kitchen island containing both a large Blanco sink and a smaller prep sink. Behind the island are two Liebherr fridges and an AEG induction range. The private rooms have a more intimate feel. Sumptuous finishes connect the experience from public to private including warm teak accents and custom quartz countertops. The clients are thrilled with the results that give them their ideal combination of open, flexible rooms for entertaining, and warm cozy spaces to recharge after a busy day.
