Through the introduction of Interstate 5 over a century ago; a divide was formed between historic Fort Vancouver and Downtown Vancouver. The Columbia River Crossing, a nearby I-5 bridge replacement and expansion project has created new opportunities for the City of Vancouver through the mitigation of the expansion on the historic buildings of Fort Vancouver.
The winning proposal for the Vancouver Community Connector will mitigate the future I-5 expansion through “putting the land back” with the intervention of a land bridge that compliments the historic buildings and landscape of Fort Vancouver. The land, and the connection it fosters between the City and Fort Vancouver, embrace the landscapes that make Washington and Vancouver remarkable; the local vernacular, geology, landscape and its Cultural heritage. The land bridge structure and landscape are sculpted to guide people from the grid of city streets through the Connector to Fort Vancouver, helping visitors transition from moving between buildings, to passing through subtle landscape walls that lead to the openness of the Fort Vancouver landscape.
