A low-impact timber entrance building for Vintgar Gorge

A new entrance building for Vintgar Gorge, designed by Ljubljana-based OFIS arhitekti, replaces a log cabin built in the mid-1980s. The contemporary structure retains the vernacular character of its predecessor while preserving key elements of the original building.

Origins of Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge is a 1.6-kilometre gorge in north-western Slovenia. Carved by glacial forces, it remained largely unexplored and inaccessible until 1891 when unusually low winter precipitation caused the water level of the Radovna River to drop. Jakob Žumer, a resident of the Gorje Municipality and its mayor, together with photographer and cartographer Benedikt Lergetporer, were the first to venture inside. Struck by the landscape, they shared news of the gorge more widely, initiating the public history of Vintgar.

Residents soon began considering how a route through the landscape might be created. Funding for construction was raised collectively by companies, hoteliers, and community fundraising events. Building paths, bridges, and galleries along the river proved demanding due to the steep rock walls and fast-flowing water. Despite these conditions, workers constructed a system of footbridges and protected walkways along the river. The gorge officially opened to visitors on 28 August 1893. Since then, the Gorje Tourist Association has managed the site as a natural landmark of national importance.

Visitor management and access strategy

In recent years, increasing tourism placed pressure on the gorge. At peak times, visitor numbers reached as many as 6,000 people per day. In response, the Gorje Tourist Association prepared a ten-year business and management plan focused on long-term stewardship. In 2019 a one-way visitor route was introduced and after the pandemic visitor numbers were deliberately limited.

Subsequently, the state introduced a formal capacity framework. Vintgar Gorge became the first natural landmark of national importance in Slovenia to receive a defined visitor limit: 2,290 visitors per day, with no more than 245 people allowed in the gorge at one time. Management measures included the relocation of parking areas away from the entrance and shuttle transport using electric buses from remote parking sites.

The approach addresses the challenge of maintaining public access while protecting the gorge’s ecological conditions. The site contains more than 600 plant species, a diverse animal life, and a distinctive geological structure.

Entrance building within Triglav National Park

Following these changes, the former entrance log cabin was replaced by a new building. The structure stands within Triglav National Park in an area classified under the third level of protection. The new 42-square-metre building retains the original dimensions and traditional character of the earlier structure while introducing a more refined architectural expression. The facade is conceived as a membrane composed of two parts: one solid and one transparent. Visitors enter through the glazed section, where the interior opens directly towards the surrounding landscape. From this space, views extend to the Radovna River, forming the first visual connection with the gorge.

Access to the building is provided via a steel bridge leading to the entrance area. The interior also accommodates a small kiosk serving visitors on the side facing away from the river.

The entrance building organises visitor arrival and access, separating organised groups, visitors with pre-purchased online tickets, and those waiting for entry when the occupancy limit has been reached.

Renovation and material strategy

The renovation followed the principle that existing elements of structural and material quality should be retained wherever possible. The new wooden facade membrane incorporates and surrounds the preserved portions of the original structure, while the lower brick plinth of the building was fully retained.

All newly introduced materials follow ecological guidelines for natural wood processing. The exterior walls were constructed using a system of wooden panels assembled without adhesives. The timber used is sourced entirely from Slovenia, with spruce forming the primary material and beech dowels used for connections. The system contains no glues or chemical agents. Windows are triple-glazed and set within spruce timber frames.

Carbonised timber cladding

The external wooden cladding, including both facade boards and roof shingles, uses carbonised timber treated with natural pine resin. This treatment provides a water-repellent surface and draws on historic wood protection techniques.

The treatment inhibits the development of mould and fungi and reduces the attraction of insects. When the pine resin coating is renewed, the surface maintains a dark tone close to black; without maintenance, the timber gradually weathers towards brown and grey.

Interior character and alpine references

In contrast to the dark exterior, the interior is finished in Slovenian larch in its natural colour and treated with oil. The design references traditional alpine hayloft construction. Display shelving and the sales counter are supported by pronounced vertical timber elements that recall the structural columns of these vernacular buildings.

Landscape and environmental considerations

The immediate surroundings of the building were designed to remain as natural as possible, with minimal intervention in the existing landscape. Particular attention was given to reducing the impact of visitor numbers on the sensitive environment of the gorge.
