The Water Factory in Szczecin is more than a leisure complex, it is a contemporary ecosystem where architecture, education, wellness, and sport are unified by one idea: water as the essential element of life. Inspired by the meanders of a river, the building is shaped to feel fluid and continuous, allowing individual zones to transition seamlessly into one another. Natural light, calm materials, and water-based motifs reinforce the sense of a coherent, welcoming landscape designed for movement, discovery, and regeneration.
At the heart of the project sits the Edukatorium, conceived as a dynamic learning environment that blends physics, chemistry, biology, geography, mathematics, and the humanities into one playful narrative. Visitors move through a Spiral of Knowledge arranged across six platforms, where interactive exhibits, laboratories, and experiments turn science into experience. Water appears in six thematic realms, Space, Climate, Ocean, Humanity, Water Civilization, and Hydroengineering, revealing how strongly it shapes both nature and culture. The educational journey culminates beneath a tall skylight, where the world’s largest suspended model of an H₂O molecule becomes the complex’s symbol and a functional interior landmark. Three mirrored spheres create a shimmering “water reflection” effect while forming an intimate auditorium for around fifty people, inviting guests to step inside the molecule for multimedia presentations, workshops, and lectures.
The recreational wing extends the same idea of immersion into the aquapark and wellness zones. The aquapark offers a rich, family-oriented program built around 21 pools with a total water surface of 1,954.4 m² and 11 slides, arranged to support different rhythms of use, from energetic play to calmer relaxation. A distinctive spatial moment appears in the recreational pool, where swirling water leads to a glass window in the basin floor that reveals the illuminated Gryphon Cave below, visually linking two levels into one layered experience. For training and sport, the facility includes a full-size 25-meter competition pool with six lanes, while younger children are welcomed into a dedicated, safe play zone enhanced by daylight.
Outside, two pools totaling nearly 650 m² are framed by wooden decks, loungers, and carefully composed greenery that shapes a pleasant microclimate for sunbathing. Summer activity expands through a set of diverse slides and family attractions, complemented by an open-air “Funny Garden” that combines movement with educational play. The wellness program forms an immersive journey of its own: a 2,500 m² sauna complex spread across three levels offers fifteen different saunas and steam rooms, enriched by distinctive themed experiences, daily rituals led by sauna masters, and a carefully designed sequence of heating and cooling that includes snow, ice, and cold-water zones. A graduation tower and rooftop terrace add a panoramic, outdoor dimension to relaxation.
Beyond pools and saunas, the Water Factory is designed as a full-day destination with dining spread across several points, from quick snacks to cocktails, and with attractions that diversify the visit into sport and social time. Climbing, bowling, squash, and fitness facilities broaden the audience and reinforce the project’s role as a place that connects generations. The outdoor public area is conceived as multi-seasonal: in warmer months it can function as an amphitheater and open-air cinema, while in cooler periods it adapts into a cozy ice rink, keeping the site active year-round.
Technology and sustainability complete the concept. A central Building Management System monitors HVAC, lighting, and security in real time, while intelligent luminaires and responsive façade solutions optimize energy use and indoor comfort. Digital wayfinding, interactive screens, and mobile access support orientation and engagement, and the use of prefabrication, 3D-printed elements, and BIM coordination strengthened precision and execution. The result is a future-proof building that can adapt to changing needs, an environment where water shapes not only recreation, but learning, atmosphere, and community life.
