What was the brief?
Our brief was to simply make an extraordinary London home, without compromise and without wasted opportunity, whilst staying within the constraints established by budget and local planning regulations.
What were the key challenges?
The excavation of such a large basement under an existing house is technically incredibly difficult. At one point we were required to prop the entire house up over the top of the hole excavated for the double story basement.
Working with the neighbours, the local authority and planning was challenging due to them resisting a development of this style and size.
The controls that concern the development of basements in conservation areas are also very strict.
The project took three years as a result.
What materials did you choose and why?
The overall vision was a contemporary interpretation of Art Deco. The palette is simple with beautiful stone, timber and black metal detailing throughout.
