Located in the heart of San Francisco, this formerly dark and cavernous space is transformed into a modern setting for a nouvelle barbeque restaurant.
The interior is composed of a restrained palette of zinc and rift-sawn oak warmed by the honey glow of indirect lighting. Reminiscent of an agrarian heritage, the utilitarian materials are treated with an uncharacteristic level of refinement similar to the cuisine itself.
The neutral ribbon consists of white walls and the various embossed and debossed elements that create an extension of space within a small dining room. A debossed back bar and a long sculptural mirror over the dining tables are physically embossed from the wall. The fractured collage of reflections abstracts the activity within the space to create a dynamic, cinematic portal.
A dynamic undulating ceiling installation composed of laser cut MDF fins bridges the gap between old and new by linking the modern insertion to the historic facade. The form of the sculpture is evocative of smoke, charred wood, and upon leaving the restaurant, the skeletal remains of one’s dinner.
