Giles Miller Studio has created a new sculptural experiment for a signature event honoring the Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids (DIFFA) in New York.
The 3-day event will kick off in Midtown Manhattan this Thursday 24th March, and is intended to mark DIFFA’s accomplishments over nearly four decades of raising money in the fight to combat AIDS, homelessness, food scarcity, and mental health issues.

In collaboration with the NYC branch of HDR, and as part of their latest investigations into the relationship between light and geometry, Giles Miller Studio presents a sculptural sphere entitled:
What Is Hope?
Giles comments:
“Our studio is honored to have been invited by HDR to contribute to this unique event for DIFFA, who have been combating HIV/AIDS and other important issues for over 30 years. Inspired by their cause, and at a time when global issues feel relentless in their oppression of humanity and happiness, we saw an opportunity to call for optimism.

“What Is Hope?” is a spherical sculptural matrix made up of hundreds of cylindrical modules connected by raw aluminum rods. The bulk of the static silver reflective ‘dots’ contrast in direction with those of the central core, which themselves rotate, spinning unceasingly, inspiring optimism and reminding the viewer to hold on to the hope within themselves.

As a studio we continue to develop new surface and sculptural typologies, and with every iteration comes a deeper understanding of the visual and material effects they are able to generate using reflection and the manipulation of light.

This latest installation incorporates a kinetic element in the central spinning core, and as always our work is typified by an artistic approach to a designed system, (in this case named the ‘Plexus’ system) which we look forward to developing into new forms and installations in the future as this concept evolves.”
