YOU Apartments

You’s apartments are located in a student area and for this reason it was important for the project to keep a flexibility regarding the occupants configuration, allowing either a single individual or a couple to be well accommodated. In both case scenarios, there is also enough room left for hosting guests. In the internal area of the apartment, the priority was to optimize the space and include a home office area, while keeping a modern and timeless look.

The project starts with a multifunctional metal shelving unit, which occupies the entire wall and was custom designed for the apartment inspired by a piece from one of our previous projects, Estúdio Avanhandava. Using the same basis, it was possible to create new modulations mixing the cabinetry: kitchen cabinets, staircase niche, shelves, TV, wardrobe and closet space for general items. A plywood panel runs the entire length of the opposite wall, bringing together the pull out couch and double bed.

We kept the kitchen countertop as it was delivered by the contractor and installed a new backsplash, in the same shade as the wall. The bathroom also kept the same finishes delivered by the contractor and we added a plywood cabinet under the existing countertop. The lighting is provided by a linear track light system that runs throughout the apartment, in addition to focal lights installed on the metal bookshelf and LED light strips on the bookshelf and headboard.

For apartment 2112 we chose a flooring of darker planks, which goes along with the urban landscape seen throughout the apartment. Neutral tones bring warmth and lightness to the space: beige tones on the walls, light wood cabinetry and white MDF that highlight the metalwork, executed in a reddish tone.

As for apartment 1604, we chose to use light wooden flooring, taking into account the view from this apartment that faces a park. Given that, we selected a palette of neutral and light tones, with beige and off white on the walls, light wood joinery and white MDF and metalwork in shades of gray. A green sofa stands out in the project, referring to the view of the park.

The original plan of the apartments comes with a balcony that was demolished and integrated to the internal area, in order to expand the total area. As we integrated the balcony, the air conditioning condenser became an item of furniture, so we designed a carpentry box to hide it in, using the same material as the headboard. As these are investment properties, the client established a limited budget for the renovation and we tried to make the most out of the original items delivered by the contractor. This way we were able to generate a minimum construction waste, which is beneficial both economically and sustainably.
