LOCAL CONTEXT – ON THE DANUBE
The house “Zwei an der Donau” in Gutenstein near Sigmaringen was designed for a married couple. During the planning process, a child was added unexpectedly but hoped for.

Gutenstein is located on a hill directly next to the Danube, which is deeply cut there. As the name suggests, the village actually stands on a rock. The building site consists of solid limestone. That is why we advised the builders not to build a basement. Instead, the garage was made larger with an adjacent wood store and additional storage space next to the cars.

SUSTAINABILITY
As with all of our buildings, we try to avoid using petroleum-based building materials. We also keep an eye on the carbon footprint and end-of-life recycling of our building materials. Unfortunately, our preferred building materials are often much more expensive than the common alternatives. That is why we do not always manage to convince our clients. It is all the more pleasing that we largely succeeded in doing so with this house. The solid wood construction is completely visible from the inside and is fully visible.

We only treat the wooden components with a water-based UV protection. The floor slab lies on a glass foam gravel bed and was built with component-activated underfloor heating. We matched the type of cement, type of sand and grain of the concrete mix to the screed that was later installed on the upper floor. Both surfaces were later sanded down and were thus able to achieve an identical appearance.

We see the indispensable need to find and use climate-friendly solutions in the construction sector. With the building material wood, we have the opportunity to build sustainably and aesthetically. We hope that we can inspire other people to use the material.

CONSTRUCTION
The wooden exterior walls were upgraded with 120mm KVH + cellulose. Soft wood fiber and ventilated silver fir formwork in the colors black and pre-grayed complete the design. The different facades underline the design concept of two buildings that are anchored together.

The roof is essentially a conventional tiled roof. Glulam elements with softwood fibreboard and rear ventilation and tiled roofing. Finally, a full-surface silver fir cladding that was laid flush around the PV system.
