Located in the National Landmark First National Bank building in downtown Portland, built in 1916, Expensify's new offices reflect the company's characteristic "choose your own adventure" working environment. As Expensify does not own the building, the project is responsible for both the grandeur of the existing interiors and the reality of the lease term. Each area of the four-story Art Deco atrium lit by the sky serves as a workplace. Seats are not assigned, conference rooms cannot be reserved, and employees choose where to sit, depending on their task or mood. The main floor includes a kitchen and living room and a custom 41-foot communal table. Upstairs, the meeting room channels a mid-century aesthetic and a barber-style lounge. On the third floor, an oak villa, reminiscent of Scandinavian construction techniques and style, offers community and individual seating for private calls and direct jobs.
Within the four-story atrium, a monumental staircase, located in front of and above the bank's main entrance, is offset by two large volumes that house resting rooms, originally intended to be lined with brass to refer to the building's historical details. Due to budget and time issues, in addition to weight issues, Pure + FreeForm's custom process was used to combine a brass manuscript, from analog to digital. The Hampton Brass finish is an idealized manifestation of Nordic brass, with golden and restrained taste and a soft wire brush texture. By fixing these panels on the face with corresponding recessed screws, the sense of substance and matter was achieved at minimum cost.
