Friends Arena

Friends Arena is Sweden's new national stadium. It will seat 50.000 for football games, while concerts and other events can accommodate up till 65.000 spectators. The arena can also be made smaller for more intimate events: By shutting off the upper level of the stands, capacity can be reduced to around 30,000 spectators. The whole arena bowl can be emptied in six minutes.

The arena will have a retractable roof, making it suitable for all types of playing fields such as grass, clay, gravel, ice or water, all year round. The arena is shaped for optimum acoustics, while the roof is designed to carry extremely heavy loads to be able to accommodate all sorts of events. Even the outside of the arena is flexible, with the ability to change colour and appearance depending on what's happening inside the arena.

The stadium building forms part of a major new urban area called Arenastaden, including hotels, housing, offices, commercial spaces and sports facilities. Friends Arena is strategically located next to Solna station, which will be extended, reaching as far as Arenastaden via a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the railway tracks.

The arena is expected to be completed at the end of 2012.
