Post-earthquake background Nikken Sekkei first became involved in designing Kumamoto Airport as the architect for the Phase 5 expansion and renovation of the domestic terminal in 2012. This project included adding a single layer to the curbside area and improving environmental performance. It received the Building and Equipment Long-life Cycle Association (BELCA) Award, one of Japan's major architecture prizes that recognizes buildings that contribute to improving the quality of the built environment. Swan Hill Specialist School is an educational hub on the lands of the Wamba Wamba, Latji Latji, Tatti Tatti, Wadi Wadi and Barapa Barapa peoples in the Murray region of Victoria. During the planning stages of the project, the foremost priority of the school administration was expanding the project of 'inclusion' and focusing on 'ability' rather than disability. Tying in with student achievements in sports and hospitality, the school is regularly the host of local community events, with the student-run cafe/kitchen a staple of the community schedule. Bay House is a compact two-bedroom retreat in a 13-acre master plan. The client wanted a home that opened to its surroundings while offering privacy for short stays. This residence on Long Island’s Noyack Bay frames spectacular water views, optimizes indoor-outdoor beachfront living, and emphasizes openness. Two offset parallel wings aligned with the shoreline are connected via circulation areas at each level. Dramatic living spaces are oriented to the water while support spaces face inland. Project “Lux Cave” involved the conversion of a 200 m2 warehouse into an entertainment area for personal use. The owner envisaged the construction of an entertainment space that aligns with their hobbies, such as watching sports or playing video games, and hanging out with friends. Moreover, the space was also intended for get-togethers and parties. The new space would include a bar with billiards and other games, a recording studio, a control room, a private cinema, and a gaming room. All apartments offer two ensuite rooms and a master bedroom, along with open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas. The rooftop garden is accessible to all residents, creating a shared outdoor space.
