Upon arriving at this place, the landscape reveals itself with an intensity that is difficult to describe. The sea becomes an infinite horizon, while a portion of jungle occupies the site with an almost sacred presence. Sometimes a location you walked past throughout your childhood—at times intriguing, at times barely noticeable—transforms into the canvas for a new home for a young family, situated on the edge of Mérida’s historical center. The project is based on an existing large, old house (casona). After the removal of deteriorated slabs and walls that were not part of the original structure, the house is divided into two wings: one within the remnants of the original structure, connected to the street, and the new wing, which integrates with the courtyard.

A family home transformed into a sanctuary—a house for living.
The project is based on a 1960s house, evolving into a home for contemporary life, a calm space for relaxation and enjoyment. The process began by clearing the pre-existing architectural program, eliminating unused spaces (a storage room, an intermediate room, and the entrance porch). Two interior courtyards were created to improve natural lighting and ventilation throughout the house.

Lore and Carlos are adventurous. That’s probably why, when they reached out to our office they did it with a lot that surely left us sleepless a couple nights. It is located in Mineral del Monte, Hidalgo, a wooded region, surrounded by mountains, cliffs and rock formations. The topography, though it is not an actual cliff, has such a pronounced slope that certainly feels like it. Embraced by trees and mist, the house that Lore and Carlos wanted, had to coexist with all of these.
