Affordable housing initiatives targeting diverse resident groups have supported this transition. The Martinet site is a former coal mine consisting of two slag heaps and several built volumes. It was closed at the end of its operation in 1976 and then left abandoned. In the 2000s, committed residents fought for the site to be reconsidered, cleaned up, secured, and gradually reinvested. Nestled in the heart of this green setting, an old locomotive shed covering 400 m² was awaiting a new purpose. In 2016, the City accepted an appealing and coherent proposal from two partners eager to develop a sustainable food production site in Charleroi. In the Agniesiebuurt area of Rotterdam, the Zomerhof quarter (ZOHO) is being transformed from a business park into a vibrant district combining apartments, restaurants and shops. De Zwarte Hond was asked to transform the Katshoek building, designed by Hugh Maaskant, from a multi-tenant commercial building into a residential building with around 250 apartments, a lively plinth and a one-storey extension on top. DIA has renovated and converted the former Auerhahn brewery in Schlitz near Fulda (Hessen), giving it a new lease of life. The listed overall site with a floor space of 800 square metres is a testimony to past industrial architecture and had not been in use since 1998. The cultural centre that has been created offers a flexibly usable events hall on the ground floor, an exhibition space in the vaulted cellar and room for a tourism office and municipal marketing. A historical Georgian ruin transformed into a Japanese Teahouse while respecting the building’s own unique charm. The challenge was introducing a Japanese cultural icon into the heart of old Tbilisi with a nod to Georgian cultures. Built in 1903, the Tuborg Harbour Brewery and held a beer brewing function up until 1996. Today, it is a transformed and expanded into an office building still anchored in the strong industrial heritage, but with a clear contemporary extension. Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects Famous Danish architect Henri Glæsel designed the Brewery in Tuborg Harbour in 1903. It was built in two stages, thus regularly modernised with reconstructions and extensions since 1926.
