BAM was invited to design swing works for the Nanhai Land Art Festival, which is the largest biennale art field in mainland China directed by the famous Japanese curator Fram Kitagawa. BAM brought a pair of swings to Foshan. “Swing Up”, deconstructs and rearranges the traditional Lion Dance, playfully referencing auspicious Chinese idioms. The eyes as the main element of the piece have different shapes, referring to the different characters of the dancing lion. The lions jolly mouth reveals is wide open and playful springs sway in the wind. We were invited to participate in the festival Fête des Lumières 2024, and we decided to present a new version of our work «Plastic Island», an installation we have developed in several cities, adapting it to different contexts and spaces. When we first created this project in 2014, it was a direct statement about the plastic islands floating in the oceans—dramatic monuments to our irresponsible consumption. The project is located on the banks of the Tiegang River in Longtan Town, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province. A thousand years ago, the renowned Northern Song literary giant Su Shi was banished to Huizhou and might have paced back and forth along this very river, drawing on the Lingnan landscape and customs to pen his "Sixteen Joys of Life in Huizhou." A millennium has passed, and people today have drawn inspiration from Su Shi's "Sixteen Joys of Life in Huizhou" to build sixteen pavilions along the circuit road between Nankun Mountain and Luofu Mountain.
