Stockholm Residence

"Tucked among established heritage buildings that define its character, Stockholm Residence sees the reworking of an existing 1920s-era apartment in the city centre by AO/JN Interiors into a refined and contemporary home. Kristofer Johnsson Swedish interior designers Alexandra Ogonowski and Jesper Nyborg are the names behind the emerging practice AO/JN Interiors. Having already established her own practice, Alexandra’s portfolio of high-end residential design was the ideal alignment with Australian-trained Jesper. Having immersed himself within the design culture in Melbourne, he draws from his time working at both Bates Smart and Hecker Guthrie on local and international projects. Together, they’ve brought a shared passio... More

Gallery House

Meditative yet modern, The Gallery House by Workroom breathes a sanctuary-like air far removed from its surroundings. The three-storey home, situated in the Melbourne suburb of Toorak, is a contemporary departure from the post-war-era landscape in which it rests – an emblem, perhaps, of the dualities it harbours within. Whilst the façade is monochromatic and megalithic, the interior is pervaded by an earthy warmth. Yet, the indoors and outdoors sit on the same plane, exemplifying an osmosis of nature and the built form. Timothy Kaye The brief for this project was notable for its dualities. “The clients wanted a keenly tailored home that was sumptuous yet subdued, private, but with great curb appeal,” says John... Peninsula Farmhouse

A recently completed Belgian-inspired farmhouse set on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula has resulted in a private retreat where a subtle palette and materiality meld seamlessly. The project was an opportunity to feature indoor and outdoor lighting, including pieces predominantly from Articolo’s Fizi and Scandal collections, while Moni, Trilogy, Eclipse and Lumi collections also feature. Timothy Kaye “When approaching lighting design for the project, I worked to develop a cohesiveness between elements of scale and natural light and the ambience created by Articolo lights. We created a sense of continuity using the same Mid Bronze finish throughout the home, marrying one space with the next.” Nicci Gree... More

Palm Desert Residence

The clients were seeking an escape from the cold, gray climate of the city for warmer surroundings and embraced the California desert and its natural landscape for their new home. A modernist home situated amongst a mountainous terrain, the space was designed to complement the wide-open vistas by bringing in natural tones and textures that spoke to the surroundings of the site. Both architectural and furniture finishes have a more relaxed approach incorporating brushed limestone flooring, warm hemlock wood ceilings paired with leathers, woven textiles and matte wood grain finishes. The scale of the home provided the perfect backdrop for the client’s diverse art collection to be appreciated up close and from afar while playing with the... More

Seaside Residence

The island is the keystone of modern kitchen design. Sitting on the threshold of purposeful space and the laid back verve of the living and dining zones, the kitchen island is often defined by the beauty of its bench top materiality and the source of light above. Suspended between horizontal planes and the two spaces designated as the heart of the home, pendant lighting has the unique capacity to unify the design dialogues that sit side by side in the home, separated by the kitchen island. Seen as an integral element to kitchen design when viewed from the living or dining space and vice versa, the gentle translucent presence of mouth blown glass can temper strong design elements in the surrounding space, distilling them to the purity of li... South Melbourne House

Formerly a maelstrom of angles, Honto Architecture has injected order into its original structure, which had previously lacked parallel. The residence possesses a zany zeal, as if fitted to the block in a frenetic fervour. Simultaneously presenting a distinct Victorian verve and a grand challenge, arranging the standing spaces into coherence seemed no easy feat. Encompassing the embodied turbulence, Honto Architecture has transformed the terrace home into a lively expression, celebrating the history of its babbling walls. Caption Experimenting with materiality and tactility, the interior of the terrace is dressed in a measured juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary details. Styled by Ruth Welsby, the dwelling is elevated by evo... More

Copycat Bar and Restaurant

Copycat blends the best that Melbourne has to offer. Stunning interiors, beautiful food, and a sophisticated drinks list to match. When the Polish bar and eatery closed last year, they found it only fitting to snag the spot and open a new restaurant, Copycat. “The stars aligned when this one came up,” Nick tells Broadsheet. “I knew it’d be a fantastic position being next to the cinema.” Caption On one side is the dining room, with a curvaceous concrete wall. On the other, a more casual area that’s perfect for pre-cinema cocktails and snacks. At the back is a cosy lounge with plush carpet, hand-blown pendant lights and a theatre-style velvet curtain along the wall. Caption “I wanted that... More

Brentwood Residence

“We aimed for a look of understated luxury,” says interior designer Claudia Afshar of the serene, stylish home she has decorated for herself in L.A.’s leafy Brentwood neighbourhood. Nestled between Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, much of the ground floor of the property looks out to stunning city views set beneath a rugged mountain landscape.  Caption In her own home, Afshar has created a fluid open plan layout for the kitchen and family room. “We love to create a pleasing flow between spaces and have a theme that permeates the entire residence,” says the designer. “Practicality and usability are paramount in enjoying a home.” Caption For the kitchen cabinetry, she chose European wh...
