"Tucked among established heritage buildings that define its character, Stockholm Residence sees the reworking of an existing 1920s-era apartment in the city centre by AO/JN Interiors into a refined and contemporary home.

Swedish interior designers Alexandra Ogonowski and Jesper Nyborg are the names behind the emerging practice AO/JN Interiors. Having already established her own practice, Alexandra’s portfolio of high-end residential design was the ideal alignment with Australian-trained Jesper. Having immersed himself within the design culture in Melbourne, he draws from his time working at both Bates Smart and Hecker Guthrie on local and international projects. Together, they’ve brought a shared passion for design to the Stockholm Residence, combining elevated textures and finishes with historical nods to create a place of retreat.

AO/JN Interiors focused on binding the old and new through a considered, timeless approach to detailing in the Stockholm Residence. While the original shell remains, existing joinery, flooring and surfaces were reworked to align with a more relevant approach. As a staging of moments that flow through from one into the next, the connecting thresholds are expressed through the creation of travertine portals.

The overall palette comprises a muted base of materials, allowing natural light to enter the voluminous interior spaces and emphasising a sense of scale and generosity. Although the original building was designed and built within the Art Deco era, its geometrical references were not overly significant to the heritage of the building, making way for new detailing and custom-designed joinery to take its place.

As its own place of respite and recharge, the feeling of being transported once inside was integral to the brief. Combining travertine, calacatta marble stone, brass accents and distinct lighting silhouettes by Apparatus heighten the familiar home into something more unique. In crafting a home that considers its past, AO/JN Interiors take full advantage of the opportunity of renewal, overlaying a classic sensibility and rhythm throughout." Words via Est Living
