Set on the edge of a national park, the Burrawong House has undergone a transformation that establishes compelling links between the dwelling and its bushland surrounds, providing opportunities for serenity and retreat. Bijl Architecture was engaged by the owners from the very conception of the project, assisting with identifying an ideal site that captured both tranquillity and suburban amenity. Astor Hellas, a leading wholesale international trading company in the Greek market, approached us to design their new headquarters in Thessaloniki, an office space that would gather all of their functions in an open environment which would reflect both their values and their brand position. On the reception floor, office space is minimal so as to accommodate visiting partners and clients as well as all secondary functions (such as the IT, archive and personnel rooms). The project of this villa, situated in the suggestive location of Como Lake (Italy), consisted of the internal and external renovation of the lot and its interior design. The construction was really degraded, completely abandoned, so it was necessary to first restore all hedges, remove and replace the existing roof, the construction of the waterproof layer, removing all the pavement and of the balconies and terraces outside; the conformation of suitable substrates for indoor flooring, and the shaving of all internal and external walls, with demolition of all the boards to construct interior walls of adequate thickness. On both, the front and the lake side, this sculptural villa shows very expressive and ornamental facades. Facing Mount Pilatus the white concrete elements are dotted with circular openings that allow glimpses into the two-levelled orangery with its exotic plants, as well as the lounge, the guest tract and the staircase accessed through one of the openings at the ground floor. The lake side with superb mountain views of the Rigi and the Bürgenstock shows off a protruding, glistering loggia made of round glass bricks. nhow Milan, a design hotel from the NH Hoteles chain, was presented at the recent Milan Design Week with an exclusively restyled bar area by designer Karim Rashid, who based the lighting project around Nafir, the suspension lamp he himself designed for Axo Light.
