The project's intention was to combine Arabic and Mediterranean inspirations in a tiny courtyard. The purpose of the intervention was to take the opportunity of a backyard completely enclosed and without any "soul". That gave us the opportunity to start with a white canvas and create a cosy landscape with the remembrance of the Mediterranean yards. This art studio was created for a retired art teacher who still loves to create art and share the experience with her two daughters. Her home did not provide adequate guest quarters, so the art studio doubles as a guest/pool house that sleeps four–two in a loft and two more in a queen murphy bed. The back of the murphy bed, along with two other walls in the studio, were clad in a thin layer of painted metal, creating magnetized boards on which to hang art. A library ladder runs the perimeter of the studio, providing access to the loft beds and canvas storage. In San Francisco, project size is limited by the high cost of living and the city’s topography. This Tank Hill site was embedded in a hillside with a steep, wooded backyard, offering limited outdoor options for its young family. Jason Speth Guests coming up the front steps of this hilltop home are met with a Carrera marble sculpture by Richard Erdman, titled Serenade, selected by our clients, whose devotion to the process made this an especially joyful collaboration. Also part of the team were Robert Wright and Jason York of McCormick and Wright, who did the interior design and were a distinct pleasure to work with. There are a lot of details and non-standard finishes in this house - personal taste, not trendy taste. The dark-grey rough stacked-slate exterior is capped with crisply contrasting white stucco.
