A space to read and spend time with friends” this was the initial requirement that was commissioned. However, an additional condition was added: “the backyard must be covered, but it is necessary to enjoy the rain and maintain contact with the outdoor”.

To fulfill these requirements, a retractable pergola is proposed to cover the 18 m2 backyard. This is divided into two structures: one fixed and one mobile. Each one is composed by three modules designed to adapt to different moments and daily activities.

First, the fixed structure provides permanent protection, offering a comfortable space for barbecue and other cooking activities in all weather conditions. In contrast, the mobile structure provides flexibility, allowing users to decide which part of the space they wish to open. This facilitates interaction with the environment, especially the visual and sensorial enjoyment of the rain.

Since the activities in this space will be mainly collective and recreational, the proposal incorporates elements that generate effects of light and shadow, while ensuring constant ventilation. These features promote comfort for prolonged or short stays.

In the second phase of the project, the barbecue area was finished, taking into account that the existing distribution and structure had to be maintained. For this purpose, materials in neutral and warm tones were chosen. The choice of these finishes creates a calm and cozy atmosphere, inviting people to enjoy and stay in the place.

The overall design prioritizes a functional and sustainable aesthetic, selecting durable and low-maintenance materials, resulting in a multifunctional space that encourages meeting, relaxation and enjoyment of the natural elements, meeting the needs and expectations of those who use it.
