Brook House

GRID Architects have just received the green light on Brook House: an exemplary housing redevelopment in Acton that will see 102 crucial new homes delivered for the Women’s Pioneer Housing Association (WPH), who have been unwaveringly dedicated to housing single women for over a century.  Caption The proposals will see the replacement of existing buildings which are no longer fit for purpose. All current homes fail to meet the minimum space standards set out in the National Described Space Standards – and none of the existing homes are wheelchair accessible. GRID’s proposals will make use of the underutilised site to create 100 one-bedroom homes, and 2 two-bedroom homes, dramatically improving upon existing cond... More

Kep Merli Restaurant

By creating a well planned indent in the landscape, the volume manifest a deeper appreciation of our natural and cultural heritage. The design and programming have been carefully planned to make it accessible for restaurant clients while effecting as few trees as possible. Leonit Ibrahimi The construction mainly consists of a lightweight concrete structure and aluminium floor to celling windows . The layered terraces create a slight distancing from the surrounding vegetation while covering the building from all sides. This surrounding membrane becomes a natural protection from the sun and the wind without the need of additional brisole. The design emphasizes the potential of developing private gardens, minimal impact on local vegetati... More

above the trees

The building site, located on a slope in Salzburg City, is accessed via a small road. The hillside location offers the possibility of designing a structure that allows the hillside to be experienced in its various altitudes, creates a connection to the outside space and enables distant views. Julian Höck Except for the covered forecourt on the ground floor, the structure is kept compact. The forecourt is dominated by the top floor and creates a valuable horizontal surface on the mountain. The primary relationship to the outside space is created by ceiling-high window areas, which are oriented analogously to the balconies and terraces east, south and west. Melissa Zgouridi The floor plan tapers towards the distant view. This... More

Earthbox

Dreams + Necessity + Available resources = Project Solving the basic equation of materializing dreams through a bounded Budget, we initiated the construction process of our architectural office. The exercise begins with the experimental transformation process of materials, such as earth, Wood and glass, configuring them between two existing trees: a flame tree, that stays outside but framed, and a guavirá tree, that stands in the middle of the space to share our company. The 30-cm rammed earth walls hold the weight of the roof, resting in only 20 cm of its width, exploiting the structural qualities of this material. All of the furniture and doors are made of recycled wooden forms used in the concrete slab that covers the offic... More

Liyuan Library-

This project is modest addition to the small village of Huairou on the outskirts of Beijing, just under a two hours drive from busy Beijing urban life. On the one hand it forms a modern programmatic complement to the village by adding a small library and reading space within a setting of quiet contemplation. On the other hand we wanted to use architecture to enhance the appreciation of the natural landscaping qualities. So instead of adding a new building inside the village center, we chose this particular site in the nearby mountains, a pleasant five minute walk from the village center. In doing so we could provide a setting of clear thoughts when one consciously takes the effort to head for the reading room. Because of the overwh... More

The Arc

ARC is an architectural and spatial research; it stands on the border of the forest and field. It’s a hybrid that performs several functions: portal, a triumphal arch, an observation deck, a bar, a well. You can climb up the spiral staircase. A narrow staircase with one stop in the “room of the artist” leads downstairs. Every year the space of the room is transformed into an art installation. The ARC is made of six-meter board according to the principles non-waste production. All cuttings are used as structural elements. ARC has a rectangular form both on the plan and facades, the portal has an acute angle cut, construction is painted in black. Size: 13.2 м high Function: Landscape object Materials: wooden timber More

Pont de singe

This project builds on a previous piece entitled "Suspension Bridge, the passage" a model of floating bridge in the exhibition space, attached to helium balloons, thus taking literally the term "suspension bridge ". I like the idea that an object is supposed to connect two mobile space, questioning its usefulness. This bridge, floating symbol of all relationships, embodies the space surrounding its slight movements caused by our air movement. For Tatton Park Biennial dedicated to the flight, I wanted to start from the idea of "hanging bridge" for its evocative and poetic potential, but taking into account the constraints from the outside: the obligation to be securely stowed. So I reversed, with three large helium balloons, the curvature... More

Free Spirit Spheres Tree House

The objective of this project was to enable people to move into the rainforest and have an experience of it – with as little impact as possible. To keep the footprint as light as humanly possible. It is also a way to increase the value of standing forest, by making it accessible to people. We enable people to access to the rainforest canopy. To celebrate the beauty and magic that is there in a mature forest. Architecturally, the theme is unity or one-ness. I feel a kinship with a lot of the pagan traditions that have preceded us. I’m sure this has influenced my interpretation of the inspiration I received. Their rituals are carried out inside a sacred circle. During ritual it is normal to imagine being inside a sphere of altered... More

Tree House, Slovenia

This freestanding house-by-a-tree is a multipurpose wooden play structure, standing on its own construction. It can be erected close to trees that are unable to support additional weight. This tree house, conceived with contemporary design principles, is not modelled on any of the classic tree house forms that take their inspiration from either real houses or garden sheds. Instead, children are offered a different understanding of shapes, new spatial experiences and new forms of play. The house is made of spruce plywood, protected on the exterior by a colourless nano-varnish. The roof is covered in a roofing cardboard that shields against most kinds of unfavourable weather conditions. Furnishings are minimal, constructed from dowel pins t... More

Treehouse Restaurant Inspired By Nature

A striking pod-shaped structure built ten metres high in a redwood tree near Warkworth, north of Auckland, will soon become home to what is believed to be New Zealand’s only treehouse restaurant. The treehouse is the focus of a new and unusual advertising campaign for Yellow (currently on TVNZ and online). The Yellow campaign follows Aucklander Tracey Collins’ real-life mission to build a restaurant in a tree using only Yellow - the book, online and mobile. Peter Eising and his team at Pacific Environment Architects, who were chosen through Yellow, say the project has been a unique challenge. “I haven’t designed a treehouse since my childhood, let alone built a restaurant in one,” Mr Eising said. “The brief was ideal for... Project • By TYIN TegnestueLibraries

Safe Haven Library

In January 2009, TYIN invited 15 norwegian architect students from NTNU to participate in a workshop at the Safe Haven Orphanage. The workshop was led by Associate Professor Hans Skotte and architect Sami Rintala. The most immediate needs of the orphanage was a library and a new sanitary building. TYIN worked on the bathhouse with the Karen workers from Noh Bo, while at the same time workshop participants put their efforts into the library. The concrete base of the library was cast onto a bed of large rocks gathered on-site. Walls were made from plastered concrete blocks, cooled the building during the day. While the open bamboo facades provided good ventilation throughout the building. The 'Iron wood' made up the solid frame construct... More
