The project arises from the strategic need to create a monographic center for pediatric cancer care by Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona. Jointly undertaken by Leclercq et Associés, Gaëtan Le Penhuel and Laurent Niget, the conversion of the old Saint Michel Hospital in Paris’s 15th arrondissement is a complex programme on a complex site. Until 2003, the site hosted a general hospital and specialist surgery departments for young children. The ensemble was a small-scale city, a “city within a city”, both unique, and hidden from the surrounding public spaces. When the time came to increase their capacity, they looked to renowned local architecture firm Ewing Cole and experienced contractor P. Agnes to expand a 40,000-square-foot facility.Capacity had been a constant challenge before the project. In 2018, 7,152 families that requested care could not be accommodated. The intervention aims to restore the value of one of the two courtyards of the General Hospital Vega Baja de Orihuela. The Erasmus MC-Sophia Children's Hospital was in urgent need of renovation. EGM architecten renovated the departments, completed the Newborn Centre, the Oncology Centre and part of the Perinatal Centre. These renovations make the hospital up-to-date and ready for the future. The Newborn Centre received a mix of luxury accommodation and birthing rooms with hotel-like style. Bamboo, quiet yet fresh material, colour use and the abundance of light create a warm healing environment. A major operation was the realisation of the Oncological Centre.
