Inspiration came from the historical typology of the Cape rural agricultural vernacular which was synonymous with the surrounding area. Limewashed fisherman’s dwellings and agricultural structures for livestock were the norm prior to the area becoming a popular respite from the city life of Cape Town 90km (55 mi) away and a village where many residents have retired to this idyllic coastline. The brief: Owners Damien and Belinda Wilde wanted to create a relaxed oasis where they could both entertain and escape, but with three school-aged sons practicality was also a priority. The architect's solution was to create a series of terraces and rooms that can be used for socialising or retreat. This resort-like configuration means teenagers can throw a pool party while Mum reads a book and Dad has a beer with a friend, all within their own spaces. The existing Mahon Pool Amenities building was located on the edge of a spectacular rock shelf overlooking the ocean and Mahon pool. The building itself was a delapidated 1960’s brick box, which was had no relationship with its context and was visually intrusive.   Our proposal sought to create a linear building, which receded into the cliffside landscape. The building shape responds to the rock form folding around the contours and its precaste materiality seeks to become an extension of the rock landform.   A concrete skirt extends from the building and creates a terraced shelf  inviting occupation and lounging. This new home in Whangaparaoa is nestled amongst the branches of protected Pohutukawa, looking through greenery to the Wade River as it flows into Arkles Bay. The brief for this project involved a new four bedroom home, with complete privacy from the street and maximum views over the water.Fulfilling this purpose, vertical metal cladding wraps up and over an enigmatic angular form that sits close to a cliff edge. AR Design Studio was approached by the clients who were looking to extend their holiday home on a cliff top on the South Coast. During the planning process, and following the unprecedented rainfall during the winter of 2014, there was subsidence close to the house and the decision was made to replace it entirely.   AR Design Studio was then tasked with designing a completely new home; the idea of movement and fracturing formed the backbone of the concept.
