The BIT Wardha academic block was a result of a social endeavour spearheaded by the Shiksha Mandal organisation. Initiated at a time when similar educational institutes were being pulled down due to a lack of fresh enrollment, the client, a century-old organisation based in Wardha, advocated for quality and affordable education in India. The process of redeveloping and converting Hoofddorp Fort took a decade. Some 8,100 m2 in size, the Dutch world heritage site has been transformed into an urban park with space for a restaurant as well as cultural and educational activities. Serge Schoemaker Architects tackled the landscape, architecture and interior in an integral manner, fusing past and present into a new entity. MWA Hart Nibbrig Hoofddorp Fort (1904) is one of the few forts along the historical Defence Line of Amsterdam with two floors. Pipi is a beautifully-sculpted residential and retail building in the heart of Bondi. Comprising 29 apartments atop ground floor retail, there is something both startling and classical in the swooping gestures of the grand vertical bays that line Hall Street. The material palette adopts coastal, sun-bleached tones of light-grey concrete, white terracotta and brick: durable materials that will weather beautifully in context.
