The project "Wohnhaus N" is a highly transparent extension of a simple residential house, which was orginally built in the sixties. The concept was the creation of a cantilevering glass body.  The outside area of the property was enclosed with a concrete wall, reliably dampening the noise of the adjacent street. gronych + dollega architekten The measure was also taken to further improve the living quality created by the vivid arrangement of water and terraces around the newly made structural shell. A. ANALYSIS | Typological background   - In the past, the island's economy was largely based on agriculture, which exploited the fertile lands. In the case where the property was not flat, the farmer was building retaining walls with the stones he had taken out of the field, a technique that preserved the precious soil from being washed away and turned the slope into arable terraces ("pezoules" ). It all started with our clients’ purchase of a house over a hundred years old. The traditional building with a gable roof was at its end. Its stone basement was still in a good condition so we decided to take down the rest of the house and use the stone socle in the basement as a foundation for the new house. Our courageous and somewhat risky plan worked out and today, the clients live in a beautiful, modern house which combines the historical soul of its predecessor and nordic esthetics with a touch of industrial style.
