After occupying 90,000 sq ft over six floors at the same location for 48 years, Godfrey & Kahn decided to relocate as the anchor tenant in a new office tower located in downtown Milwaukee. Godfrey & Kahn occupies the top three floors of the building, including a private east-facing terrace located on the 19th floor. Dpai was asked to renovate an existing reading space and respond to the current demands and expectations of faculty and students, while reflecting the changing layout of learning spaces. A central curvilinear partial-height partition was proposed to provide three meeting rooms for small to medium study groups and video conferences, while retaining light and vision through the space with generous glazed panels. Access to natural light is a precious commodity in the modernist tower and priority was given to the open-study and small collaborative study groupings. The workspaces are efficiently organized to use the natural light equally and is completed by pieces of furniture and plants that improve the feeling of the work environment. This being a completely modernized 1970-s industrial building, the structure was left exposed and emphasized by contrast of the new elements.
