At the request of long time clients, we designed and supervised the construction of a new cabin in the Chamonix valley. The site is located within a residential compound built in the 50’s. A cabin dating from the original master plan was on the lot. The location benefits from sweeping and stunning views over the Mont Blanc skyline. The project is located in the heart of the Sancerre wine region, in Chavignol. The owner, a wine producer, entrusted the agency with the design and construction of his family home, conceived as a living space that is both intimate and open to the landscape. The hillside site offers exceptional views of the slopes where the client's vineyards extend. This rich and soothing view guided the design of the spaces from the outset. This landmark project is situated on a prime corner of the Boundary Park Industrial Park development in Northriding, Johannesburg. The site location, coupled with the tenant’s large staff compliment, led to a somewhat unconventional office to warehouse ratio of 60:40 instead of the more typical 90:10 ratio. Tasked with building only 950 Sq.Mt. on a site that would normally have been built out to 1500 Sq.Mt. meant that the project could be designed free from the need to conform to the outer setback line mandated by city planners. To this end, an internal brief was created - that 40% of the house must be a garden and 60% of the house must look into it. Hence the name, 40/60 House. Situated on an enviable prominent suburban corner site within walking distance to Sumner beach clients were keen to rebuild on their existing site. The decision was made to remove their existing family dwelling which would have required considerable remediation to convert into a healthy home to accommodate the new house. The site runs EW and the house follows this orientation facing north enjoying all day sun. Roof overhangs and sliding screens provide flexible sun control. Hill views to the east are captured by the upper rooms and from the western wing.
