As the importance of walkable urban environments continues to gain global attention, hatmachida represents a practical urban strategy that inserts a compact 22.7 m² architectural intervention into a corner of a major thoroughfare as a catalyst for public activity. By deliberately positioning a small yet active presence within the city fabric, the project seeks to generate ripple effects across surrounding districts. Architecture that evolves through sustained use over time questions conventional approaches to urban renewal and proposes an alternative model for shaping cities in the years ahead.

In the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, USA, a new student center for Portsmouth Abbey School seeks to enhance the overall campus experience for students. Designed by New York-based ikon.5 architects, the student center fulfils the vision of the school’s master plan, hosting spaces to support academic collaboration, socialising, and school events. Founded in 1926 by the English Benedictine Congregation, Portsmouth Abbey School is a boarding and day school for students in grades 9 to 12. The new student center’s design embraces the Benedictine philosophy of environmental responsibility, aligning with contemporary values of sustainability.

Alpine Flax Hut Conversion
This project entails the adaptation and extension of a heritage-listed flax threshing hut located in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. The client brief required that the existing stone construction, dating back to the 18th century, be upgraded into a fully functional country home. In close dialogue with the local heritage authorities, a strategy was developed to keep the original building fabric as intact as possible while accommodating complementary functions in a new low-slung volume which at first glance is perceived as a separate and autonomous construction.

Auditorium–Theatre in old Illueca clad with a beautiful red clinker facade
In the northern Spanish town of Illueca, this new cultural building replaces an aging cinema on the eastern edge of town. The broader region is one of the most sparsely populated areas of Spain.

To provide leisure and cultural programs to discourage further depopulation, the town council called for a design competition to build the theatre. This winning design by Magen Arquitectos responds to the small-scale nature of its surroundings with an ensemble form that unobtrusively situates itself in its context. The beautiful red clinker façade meanwhile elegantly plays with lights and references the region's rich pottery tradition.

The special location of the narrow and at the same time deep building site directly at the rushing Isar, flanked by listed buildings, the German Museum vis-a-vis and the Gärtnerplatz with its virulent hustle and bustle in the back, offered ample reason to deal in detail with the proud Munich cityscape. The aim was to complement the historic boulevard with a pleasantly integrated, elegant and at the same time identity-creating residential building as a city building block. The design elements of the neighboring historic facades with their heterogeneous structures were taken up in scale and translated into contemporary material and design.
