The key challenges for this project lied in adapting the existing fabric with the contemporary addition towards the rear. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, the original design is an exemplar of Bungalow architecture which was highly popularised during the early 20th Century. The Ismaili Centre, designed by Moriyama Teshima Architects in association with Charles Correa Associates, uniquely responds to established Islamic building traditions, while incorporating contemporary architectural form, materiality, and construction methods. The project entails a significant expansion of an existing 'King-Cottage' style home, elegantly adapting it to meet the needs of the family. Fluidity of interior spaces towards the exterior The owners aimed to enlarge their home while maximizing their outdoor space usage throughout the year. The project, as designed, creates a seamless and natural transition between the interior and exterior. To achieve this, the architects initially incorporated an exposed wooden structure that stretches into a covered outdoor space. The main living area is generously extended, providing the opportunity to enjoy the backyard even on rainy days. The award-winning Skokie Valley Synagogue renovation transformed the sanctuary, built in 1963, from a dark and formal room to an ethereal, bright and ADA accessible space for a contemporary congregation. The renovation included the installation of new windows and HVAC system throughout the building, as well as converting the old, large stage into new, modern bathrooms and a coat room. This project by Mitchell + Corti Architects began with an old terrace house: run down, tired and blue, with mock features, a tight spiral staircase, haphazard layout, low ceilings and jaded decor. We were approached to assist our young client in boosting this property’s spirits from dejected to dynamic by creating an invitingly bright and well-organised home.We set out to marry a traditional exterior with cleverly designed contemporary spaces.
