Appareil Architecture’s prefabricated modular cabin prioritizes eco-responsibility

Montreal-based Appareil Architecture has completed the Micro-Cabine, a small-scale cabin that was developed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Designed for a natural setting, one typically off the beaten track, Appareil focused attention on minimizing the building’s ecological footprint by combining strategies related to its scale and prefabrication — this approach informed the studio’s architectural thinking and resource-saving construction methodology. Félix Michaud   Less is invariably more The Micro-Cabine is described as “a special project” by Appareil Architecture, one that is part of a period of research and development that began in 2020, during Covid’s mandatory lockdowns. Mirontsevo village

The architectural concept of the village of Mirontsevo is not only about urban planning solutions for the picturesque area on the banks of the Istra reservoir. First of all, this village is about a community of active and successful people. A potential resident of the village is a member of the IT-community or employees of large technology companies.  Caption The concept of the village includes entrepreneurial and self-government scenarios:  residents of Mirontsevo will be able to program the space and develop the public spaces, defining the functions for the given area, whether it is an eco-farm, a children's club, or, for example, a family restaurant. Moreover, the residents will be able to open a small business on their t... More

Under the Willow Tree

The first idea was to renovate their previous home. But it just so happened that a week after their first meeting at our office, our customers were able to buy the home of their dreams: an old holiday home at the highest point of the village, in the midst of the countryside. Apart from the phenomenal views, the plot has an extra asset: a beautiful weeping willow. Bert Vereecke The structure of the old house from 1904 was maintained as much as possible, in order to preserve the character of the facade. The traditional Flemish rear extension was replaced by a new structure, fitting into its casing as if it were a lipstick. The new volume was clad with black tiles, both on the façade and on the roof, which blends in nicely with the orig... More

Eco, biobased villa near Amsterdam, Netherlands

The house has been designed according to the sustainable principles of biobased, ecological construction. In the design and construction of this house, we carefully looked at the orientation, the sun and the usual wind direction (for example, for the possibilities for night ventilation). The sun has a lot of influence on the shape and the layout. The house is constructed from a vapour permeable timber frame construction system, delivered on site as prefabricated elements. All the insulation materials above the ground are natural. Martijn Heil The plots are relative small in this project. The neighbouring home is relative close by and provide much shade in winter. The clients have therefore chosen not to create a roof overhang on... More

Bhojwani Tower

It took Crossville's beautiful porcelain tile panels and an innovative cladding system to answer the demands of Miami Beach's building codes and historic preservation standards.Built in the late 1950s, Bhojwani Tower was designed by Albert Anis, known for his Art Deco architecture throughout Miami. Originally a bank, the Bhojwani, located on the corner of one of Miami Beach’s busiest pedestrian intersections, operates as a mixed-use building with residential and retail areas. When beginning the renovation process, Kobi Karp Architecture and Interior Design not only had to consider updating the building’s exterior to stringent building codes but also meeting the requirements of the Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board.Due to h... Huizache House

The house and studio for a Visual Artist and his fiancee, respond to a series of themes such as the relationship with the physical context, the needs of the client, security and a limited budget. For this project, six options were analyzed at the schematic design level that sought to control the wind that comes from the northeast and that occurs in the first months of the year with greater intensity, the sun and the quality of light that enters the building, as well as its cost, energy, and specific operating expenses.   Through the use of various design performance tools and technologies such as Fluid Dynamics, Energy Consumption Analysis Material Life Cycle Assessment, and Climate Analysis” the existing conditions were reprod... Eco Quarter Cartoucherie Wood'art

The mixed-use eco-district “Cartoucherie Wood’art” ist built on a former industrial site on the left bank of the Garonne. Together with Seuil Architecture, we have built a complex with flats, shops and a hotel on a 13,000 m² site. On the edge of the public square and lined by the tram axis, the hotel tower sets a clear accent in the new district. Behind it, on the quieter west side, two residential complexes rise on a plinth with shops and public facilities. The lush green gardens on the roof of the plinth are visible from the square and provide common meeting spaces for the residents. They also form a reserve for biodiversity and limit the creation of heat islands. At ground level, a pedestrian street connects all th... More

Amsterdam 235

The project consists in the intervention in an old Art Deco house, catalogued by the National Institute of Beaux Arts. The complete house, façade and interiors, was recovered to create three apartments (one duplex, two simplex), with access through a hall of double height, decorated with epoch moldings and stained-glass windows.   At the far end of the property a building is designed, with five apartments in six levels, three of which are superimposed on the building. Each of these is recessed, creating terraces which open to an avenue lined with trees. The way in which the new building and house are joined, opens the space for a central patio, southerly oriented. All five apartments live toward this area. The façades o... More

Restaurant mistinguett'

by Luca Bullaro (UNAL Colombia), Superficies Arquitectos The topics of the project are the integration of architecture with nature, low budget, passive bioclimatic and reuse. The main space of the restaurant is developed on an abandoned terrace: is covered with a light and economical structure. Existing columns and metal beams are reused. The structure is painted white, like the brick's walls, to confer the maximum of luminosity, to increase the climatic comfort and to give prominence to the various shades of green of the natural elements.A system of metallic cables is positioned on top of the cover, in order to support and to allow the growth of plants that have the function of generating an ecological and protective layer: a... Regnum Sky Tower

Focusing essentially on the individual, functionality and usability, this building combines them to offer an architectural creation which stands out among so many others in one of the fastest growing business areas of Ankara. The primary design lines have been uniformly applied on the entire building of 150 meters. The curtain walls were used as an empty canvas on which a unique image was formed. Horizontal and vertical design lines meet the slopes leading to the top through "dancing" like moves. Minimal design highlights the building's character, as for the companies that are located into it, there is a strong demand on a clear and serious image. The natural light, which enters unobstructed inside the building, helps and enhances the effic... More

Nana Princess Suites

Adjusting to the slopes and the shapes of the terrain in Hersonissos of Crete, the hotel is developed through mild slopes instigating a smooth, but at the same time peculiar, combination of contemporary and traditional local elements. Two double-storey buildings include the extrovert uses and dominate the highest point of the plot. On the one hand, they provide access to the highway, on the other, they form a sense of isolation for the rooms which are developed alongside the coast. Deliberately gaps and integrated rooms which are shaped linearly on successive elevations ensure that the views remain unobstructed. Simple, clean lines and volumes along with earthy elements of grey carved stone, concrete, wood, and naturally oxidized metal form... More
