Limelight Hotel

Situated adjacent to the Sun Valley, Ketchum, Idaho is a small mountain town that’s big on natural splendor.  The best architectural design is informed by its surrounding environment so this place, more than most, is bound to have some gems.  Case in point, the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum.   We had the great pleasure of sitting down with Sarah Broughton of Rowland + Broughton Architects to talk about the condominiums she and her team designed for the Limelight.  When you view photographs of this space you might see a warm and inviting place, with clean modern lines and a gorgeous fireplace in the center.   Sarah sees these things too, but she also sees so much more.  She sees how the color palette talks to the natural creams and browns out... Renovating Early Modernism: An Interview with Arch

Walter Gropius gets all the acclaim in Massachusetts. Perhaps it’s because he taught at Harvard and his Gropius House in Lincoln, MA, looms large as a pillar of early modernist American architecture. However, he wasn’t alone, and he wasn’t the first to introduce the international modern style to the United States. Edwin B. Goodell Jr. (an MIT man just drive home the rivalry) was a member of a group of lesser-known architects that would later be called the “Invisible Modernists.” By the time Gropius and others came to the U.S. from Europe, Goodell had already designed and built a number of homes inspired by the Bauhaus aesthetic. One of Goodell’s early homes still sits on a rocky New England hillside in... Method Home Prefab with Lucius 140 Fireplace

This installation took place in northern California and into the burgeoning world of modern prefab architecture.   “The word prefab is often used to describe any type of home that is made from easy-to-assemble building parts that were manufactured off-site.” (architecture.about.com)However, what makes modern prefab architecture so intriguing to architects, city planners and early adopters is its attention to precision and design. Prefabrication allows for repeatability, predictability (a good thing when faced with the inherent unpredictable nature of home building) and a limitation of waste. In theory, the resources saved by mitigating waste can then be reinvested in higher quality materials.Read the whole... Sky Adler is the Senior Director of Architecture and Design for Kona Grill, a fine dining restaurant specializing in sushi and an array of handmade cocktails. Sky cut his teeth in design while living in LA and working in the film industry as a production designer for over a decade. One of the first things I noticed when I walked into the new Kona Grill in Minnetonka, MN was how theatrical the whole experience was. A giant blue LED bubble wall greets you for your red-carpet entrance. Over by the bar, the sushi chef is cutting sashimi on his illuminated stage. Finally, as you turn the corner, you are treated to an Element4 eight-foot long see-through gas fireplace which brings drama and warmth to the ent... Breckenridge Bliss
