Jellison Cancer Institute's vision is to provide patients with the full continuum of modern cancer care — from diagnosis and intervention to survivorship care — all close to home under one roof. The new nine-story Oncology Inpatient and Surgical Tower supports that vision by providing specialty programs for breast, GYN, GI/colorectal, and lung cancers, as well as prostate/GU, neuro-oncology, melanoma, and hematologic subspecialties. Sarasota County is building a new Venice Public Library. The new building, of approximately 24,000 SF, accommodates adult, young adult and children programming as well as meeting rooms. The library provides PC workstations and charging stations, a multi purpose meeting room, a conference room, a maker space, group study rooms, and tutoring rooms. It was completed in December 2018. The Project is a 38,500 SF visual arts center for Ringling College of Art and Design. To reinforce the campus urban form and to establish a central north-south pedestrian axis, the design was developed in two separate volumes on each side of a public walkway. Windows on each side of the walk allow students, staff and guests to see art making processes in real time as they move throughout the campus. The east one-story volume houses ceramic and glass art studios which open to a new campus green space on the south. A 3,000 SF art gallery along the north side of the one story building replaces a former college gallery. This project utilizes passive sustainable practices as a baseline of design prior to integrating active systems. Breaking apart the programmatic spaces of the home (living, sleeping, and storage) and creating exterior circulation between these volumes resulted in smaller masses to cool. This also created two “breezeways” between the volumes, capturing the predominant east-west breezes and generating comfortable exterior spaces. The volumes are unified by one large roof, with generous overhangs on the west façade. Expansive overhangs shade the glass, providing natural daylighting, minimizing heat gain, and creating a comfortable outdoor living environment under roof. ArtsPark at Young Circle is a significant cultural center and urban design project located in downtown Hollywood. It is a 10-acre innovative cultural arts destination and active and passive landscaped environment. The initial design challenge was to mitigate several major dysfunctional aspects of the site, which is a circle surrounded by a busy, one-way thoroughfare with multiple cross entries. This modern home, of 9000 square feet, is located in an affluent, waterfront community. While there were no unusual programmatic requirements, the client wanted to achieve a sense of drama in the architecture and interiors; most importantly to capture the panoramic views. The house emerged as two slender volumes that oriented themselves perpendicular to the primary viewing plane. A double height space connects these two parallel wings. The connecting volume acts as the entry in to the formal living room and dining room, featuring full height glass fenestrations, in both the front and the back.
