Completed in 2023 in the Istra District of the Moscow Region, Graphite is a 516 m² private residence where the exposed Fachwerk frame defines the architecture. Glued laminated timber posts and beams form a precise grid for panoramic glazing, while structural steel connections are concealed within the timber elements to preserve the clarity of the construction.

Detail: Henning Larsen’s World of Volvo is a study in mass timber construction
“World of Volvo” opened its doors to visitors in Spring 2024. A joint venture between Volvo Cars and Volvo Group, the new experience center is located in central Gothenburg, the Swedish city where Volvo’s journey began in 1927. The project by global architecture firm Henning Larsen is a study in mass timber construction. Spanning 22,000 square meters (236,806 square feet), the building is constructed from glued laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) — on the interior, three majestic tree trunk-like columns are arranged in a mathematical pattern and fan outwards, their “canopies” supporting the roof’s entire mass and enveloping visitors in an enchanting forest-like setting.

Glued laminated timber — also known as glulam and GLT — is, as the name suggests, a form of timber made by gluing together layers of wood to create beams and columns in a range of sizes. Glulam is often used in long-span designs — its strength-to-weight ratio is superior to both concrete and steel. Glulam is made in both straight lengths and curved pieces typically from fir, larch, oak, pine, or spruce. It is often used in medium/high-rise timber residential and commercial projects where height is not a constraint.
