Three Decades of Timeless Cycladic Architecture

Completed in 1991, Ftelari demonstrates how architecture rooted in place, proportion and simplicity can remain remarkably contemporary more than three decades later. More than three decades after its completion, Ftelari stands as a compelling example of architecture whose relevance has only deepened with time. Designed by Greek architect Nikolaos Tsempelis in 1991, the residence demonstrates how an architectural language rooted in place, proportion and simplicity can remain contemporary across generations. Giorgos Sfakianakis Set on the volcanic cliffs between Fira and Oia, the villa occupies a privileged position overlooking Santorini’s caldera and the Aegean Sea. Conceived at a time when Oia was still emerging as an internati... More

Corte Interna

A complex of three stone-built buildings is located west of the city of Chania in the village of Kalivani, near Balos. Built on a plot of 420 sq.m., the buildings, measuring 220 sq.m., are arranged around an inner courtyard with water as the connecting element between the building volumes. Pointed arches, doorways with semicircular or low-arched lintels reveal the Venetian imprint on Cretan architecture. George Anastasakis The two-story building is the first one you encounter as you enter from the main road of the village. The ground floor accommodates the living areas and a bedroom with its own bathroom. On the first floor, there are two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and a WC. One of the main interventions in this building was... More

Rural House on Kythera

The house is located in the small village of Spilies, in Kythera and it is a typical sample of the island's rural traditional architecture. It dates back to 1910 and architectural elements such as the stone walls, the thick chimneys and the small openings are evident characteristics of its fortified nature. The complex consists of the main building, which was historically the house of the family and a smaller building that the family used for producing and baking bread. Panagiotis Papanikolaou Panagiotis Papanikolaou Panagiotis Papanikolaou Panagiotis Papanikolaou During its long life, the house had suffered from several interventions that had altered its architectural character. Therefore, one of the main goals of the... More

Riza I

Located in the area with the toponym "Psilafi" in Paros Greece. As its Greek name betrays it, it is at the highest point of a hill, it has a southwest orientation on the long side, overlooking the sea and Antiparos. The "dwellings" found in the area have a unique character due to the topography. It is a series of buildings of local architecture with different uses (houses, warehouses, stables, etc.) and geometry (oncoplasia) that are composed as a whole. Panagiotis Voumvakis Panagiotis Voumvakis Influenced by the vernacular architecture and its reduction to a more modern and free form, we proposed the creation of white folded walls that are rooted (riza) to the ground and begin to unfold on the landscape, and can easily adapt to... Vacation House in an Olive Grove

On the eastern part of the Greek island of Naxos, amidst an primitive landscape, far away from the saturation of tourism, a simple single story vacation house was built within the confines of a deserted olive grove. Iakovos Theodoros Apeiranthitis   The composition consists of a simple, rectangular form in which a frugal, linear program was embedded, designed to fit the needs of the owner and her family. The only interruption in the form is the exterior shower, forming a boundary between private and public, protecting the bedrooms from the more extroverted living room. Iakovos Theodoros Apeiranthitis A main consideration for the design was the relationship between interior and exterior spaces, which remains strong, regardl... More

Metope

Casa Metope is located in the south part of Corfu, in Chlomos. The plot provides breathtaking views of the Ionian sea and the Korission lake. The aim of the project wwas to create a residence that best fits the needs of its residents and best frames the panoramic views.  The biggest challenges we had to face were the stip slope and the narrow limits. Caption Caption Caption Caption Caption Caption Taking this into consideration we split the the project in two volumes and created an optical game which expands the idea of its limits. On the top level we have placed the main house, a two level structure surrounded by private and public atriums and built pergolas that mimic the style of the house to blur the... More

Inside Out House

On a South West facing lot with little vegetation and a dry and barren environment, the house seeks a balance between privacy and a relationship with the exterior space. Persistent and easy-maintenance materials are used from the start, understanding the environment and the user's requirements. Julia Kilma Julia Kilma Julia Kilma Julia Kilma Julia Kilma Julia Kilma The design of this 120 sq. metre house was based on an isosceles cross, on which the main spaces, the open plan kitchen, the dining room, the two bedrooms, the bathroom and the storage room are articulated. The entrance is made from the side of the open-plan kitchen-dining area, which is located on one side of the cross. The two large openings of th... More

The Observatory - Isna

Nestled on the edge of a gorge in Greece, the Observatory stands as a testament to the dreams of an American-Thai family spanning three generations. The grandfather, inspired by his mother's love for Greece, envisioned a haven—a meeting point for a family scattered across the globe. Mirto Iatropoulou Mirto Iatropoulou This architectural venture involved delicately connecting two independent buildings that had stood side by side for centuries. The structures, perched on the gorge’s edge, underwent meticulous stabilisation and rejuvenation. Local heritage materials were used, seamlessly blending the new with the old. The surrounding land, with its steep slope, was transformed into an integrated external space, connectin... More

Monastery House

When looking for somewhere to build their holiday home the decision was easy for our clients. Their heritage was strongly linked to the remote and rugged lands of the Mani Peninsula in Greece. It was the location on which they had their hearts set for a holiday retreat for their extended, multigenerational family. The plot of land they purchased was set high on a mountainside offering spectacular views, which can only really be compared to travelling on an aeroplane, peering down on the village and the sea below. Panagiotis Voumvakis The brief:Our task was to create a space for the family to come together whilst also making room for them each to have individual space within the complex. Due to the remote and rather wild location of th... More

Helikon Shipping Offices

In the center of the seaside suburb of Glyfada, are the headquarters of Helikon Shipping, a shipping company with a rich heritage since 1961. Today Helikon is low profile company, of high standards, professionally and culturally related to Japan. The total number of employees at its headquarters amounts to 25 people. Accordingly, Urban Soul Project was asked to design a space with a notion to Japan, incorporating a subtle use of color. As a result, the contemporary design approach of the office articulates a distinct design language, which nevertheless foresees the integration of elements from Helikon's past, as well as the cultural and professional relationship with Japan. Belleview Apartment

The Belleview apartment is located in a typical 1960s multistorey building on Thessaloniki’s seafront. Its original design exhibited the era’s architectural characteristics: narrow corridors, continuous constricted balconies, and small balcony doors, lacking comfort and a connection to the environment.  Kim Powell Photography Kim Powell Photography The new apartment was tailored for a young family seeking a closer link with the coastal surroundings, aiming to evoke a sun-white washed effect within the living space and to challenge the traditional arrangement of the 1960s. Kim Powell Photography Kim Powell Photography The U-shaped floor plan was crucial in defining the design process, with an axis paral... More

Technopolis auditorium

Design and construction supervision by architect Ioulietta Zindrou The design of the Auditorium is based on the conception of the space as a complex, though elegant “acoustic device”.  We crafted the space into a dynamic field through design innovations, technological applications and material processes in construction and management, towards an optimal passive acoustic space performance  Through advanced design, sound calculus and construction technology, algorithmic and material processes, a ceaseless dynamism between sculpturing and engineering emerged.  Caption Conceptually the auditorium was conceived as a place of creation and offer of cultural experiences, and is inextricably linked to visually rec...
