The faceted design of a new residential building responds to its surroundings

In Stans, Switzerland, Zürich-based Bob Gysin Partner (BGP) has completed the new Mettenweg residential building. A place for “people with special care and care needs, regardless of age,” this new edifice replaces the historic Mettenweg home — with its outdated infrastructure, the original home was no longer able to hold a care permit. The building’s faceted construction is designed to integrate the residence with the neighboring buildings and nature, while at the same time defining its own unique presence. Roger Frei, Zurich   Faceted construction inside and outside The site in which the Mettenweg residence sits includes a number of structures from different eras, built in a hamlet-like formati... St. Joseph’s Judy Dow Alexander Cancer Center

HED designed the St. Joseph’s Judy Dow Alexander Cancer Center Addition located in Ypsilanti, Michigan to create more space for the program's expanding needs. This cancer care expansion was designed to provide a space suited for evolving research and education in oncology while also accommodating the facility’s significant patient population expansion in recent years. Serving as a clear landmark on the campus, the glass curtainwall design was created to stand out and provide natural lighting throughout the facility. This design denotes its independent identity while the steel structure and interior brick still seamlessly connect it to the core of the surrounding campus. Upon entry into the main atrium, a large glass skylight p... More

CENTRE FOR ADDICTION AND MENTAL HEALTH

Completed in 2012, the award-winning Centre for Addiction and Mental Health at Village Family Health was designed by ARK Inc. as a premier facility in Toronto’s Liberty Village.   Relocating a team of mental healthcare professionals away from the support, security and comfort of a large urban hospital is an innovative strategy to both increase patient access to healthcare and to de-stigmatize the delivery of these services. The Village Family Health Team integrates mental health services with primary healthcare programs, functioning as a subsidiary to Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Designed by Toronto-based architecture firm ARK Inc., the clinic is an adaptive re-use project that borrows from the... More

Cooperman Family Pavilion

The illuminated feature wall casts RGB light onto the primary staircase inside the lobby of this healthcare building, which can be seen from the outside through the full height glass facade. The vertical design of the accent wall emphasizes the height of the space while infusing light into the entrance area and creating visual interest.Twenty-one LED Light Panels form the three dynamic wall features of the lobby, controlled by DMX decoders with signal amplification. The color changing panels create a broad array of colors that fade slowly through the visible color gamut. This is theoretically 16 million colors, which is the product of 255 x 255 x 255 (the range for each channel). The vibrant lighting effect can be set to static colors to su... More
