Carr’s sustainable Bruce Street building is a catalyst for urban renewal
In Melbourne’s inner-city suburb of Kensington, a new red brick and concrete building pays tribute to the area’s historic and industrial past. Designed by Melbourne-based architecture and interior design studio Carr, the eight-story “Bruce Street” building is uniquely placed to be a catalyst in the area’s urban renewal. The first development of scale in Kensington, Bruce Street is also the first project to pass Melbourne City Council’s Green Factor Tool (Carr explains this initiative will “impose a positive obligation on landscape designers, architects, planners, and developers to improve the extent of vegetation cover on private land in Melbourne.”)

Temporary Munich cultural center is constructed from steel sheet pile walls
Munich-based Mahlknecht Herrle Architektur designed an interim home for Schwere Reiter, an artist collective also located in the Bavarian capital. The design concept for the new cultural center, a space for dance, theater, and music, was based around several parameters: erecting the structure in the shortest possible time, retaining the atmosphere of Schwere Reiter’s previous building, and creating something new. Mahlknecht Herrle Architektur explains that the temporary character of the new building “is underpinned by a simple construction method with a clear static system and materials that can largely be recycled after deconstruction.”

Part of a new large-scale commercial area within the growing city, Harmay designed by Aim Architecture, seeks inspiration from raw brutality and the industrial nature of the ever-changing urban landscape of Shenzhen.

The use of intricate piping systems as a focal point elevates them as an object, making them appear as capillaries beneath the megastructure's smooth exterior. While terminal tubes are dispersed and gathered to form an interactive interface, galvanised steel pipes encircle the space to act as a boundary. To draw customers, the outdoor public area is linked to the inner commercial entity via a narrow and deep space, revealing a naturally linear organisation.

Traditionally, rooftop areas in urban areas were largely reserved for machine rooms. This changed in 1923 when the Plaza Hotel in New York announced its penthouse project, which set off a desire for penthouses in cities around the world.
