Vollebak Spaceshop

For SAGA Space Architects, designing for extreme environments is an everyday task. The studio has spent years exploring how architecture can adapt to the extreme environments while still closely working with projects on Earth. The latest project, however, has ventured into retail. Caption Caption Vollebak Spaceshop, designed and built by SAGA, is a 1,000-kilogram spacecraft-inspired pop-up that reimagines the idea of a shopping experience. Created in collaboration with Vollebak, the experimental clothing brand known for garments inspired by space and survival, and Bang & Olufsen, Denmark’s century-old luxury audio brand, the Spaceshop merges engineering, design, and architecture into a single mobile structure. Podere Bedano

The property, an antique Tuscan farm whose original nucleus dates back to 1712, lies near Casale Marittimo, a small town of the Alta Maremma, located 10 km inland from the sea. The challenge was to introduce and involve minimal and contemporary architectural elements in an environment rich in nature and tradition. The solution adopted to achieve this objective has been to maintain as much as possible the vernacular architecture of Maremma using local technologies and materials for the external envelope, juxtaposing minimal design and clean interiors. The help of local workers during the construction phase has been crucial for plugging the building in the landscape and environment context and to respect local architectural traditions. Act... More

Penguins Protection System

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE Climate change has warmed the planet and disrupted ecosystem cycles in nature. One of these problems is the rapid melting of polar ice caps, which has serious consequences for the environment and the future of mankind. One of the major concerns of melting polar ice caps is the risk of extinction of many animals, including penguins. The presence of ice is vital for their life and spawning. Melting ice also reduces the penguins' food. Thousands of emperor penguin chicks drowned when the sea-ice on which they were being raised was destroyed in severe weather. The catastrophe occurred in 2016 in Antarctica's Weddell Sea.   IDEATION PROCESS   "penguins protection system" consists of:   1. IGLOO (Inspi... More

Reliance Technology Group Research Facility

When we speak of “high tech” or “high performance” buildings, the immediate vision is of the Starship Enterprise or some such figment of cinematic imagination. Having had the opportunity of working in India and other developing nations, ANA has had the good fortune of being a part of very committed and innovative teams that have delivered such buildings, in very competitive timelines and costs. Our biggest so far, has been the flagship laboratory complex for Reliance Technology Group or RTG for Reliance Industries Limited at Navi Mumbai. This laboratory complex, spread over half a million square feet, houses the research laboratories for all businesses of Reliance Industries, and the main National Operations Centr... More

Market Lane

These days we hear a lot about workplaces of the future – but where does the architecture fit into that? This question was our point of departure for Market Lane, a new office project that kicked off a new chapter of experimentation at Elenberg Fraser. With a massive generational shift underway in the workforce – did you know millenials willmake up the majority of Australia’s workforce by 2020? – we wanted to understand exactly what makes people want to work at, and stay working at, a workplace. As you know, our studio is all about art and science, so it makes sense that we conducted an intensive three month researchplatform into office architecture after embarking on this project, collaborating with a workplace pla... Bosch Prototype Development Center

With offices, testing facilities and laboratories scattered throughout the Metro-Detroit region, Robert Bosch Corporation needed to create a powerhouse central location that would bring it all together: consolidate talent, and technologies. Streamline research and development. Accommodate recent—and future—growth. Establish a collaborative, dynamic community that would attract and retain top-tier talent and enhance the well-being of its current workforce. And embody the sustainable strategies that Bosch employs in its own work.   With a significant new expansion to Bosch’s Plymouth Township Prototype Development Center, HED achieved—and transcended—each of these goals. VA3 Data Center: NTT (Formerly RagingWire)

Located in the heart of Data Center Alley, VA3 is an award-winning flagship building that anchors NTT's Ashburn campus. It marks the first phase of a seven building development on the 78-acre campus.  NTT (formerly RagingWire) engaged HED to provide full service architecture and MEP services to design a bold yet competitive facility for their retail and wholesale customers. The new building measures 245,000 square feet, including 112,000 square feet of raised floor divided into six data halls.  Designed for 99.999% uptime, the data center features 33MW of backup generator power, waterless cooling using pumped refrigerant economizers and condensers and 16MW of critical IT load.  The front of the two-story struct... PA-1 Data Center: vXchnge Holdings, LLC

HED recently collaborated with vXchnge, a young data center colocation company seeking to establish industry leadership by providing innovative, customized, secure and reliable computer environments.   A central part of our work was developing global branding guidelines to be implemented in all vXchnge facilities. At the time of our collaboration, vXchnge was in the midst of expanding their portfolio by establishing new locations within existing buildings in key cities. One such facility is the new Philadelphia Data Center. Located on the fifth floor of a downtown high-rise building, the existing space presented many challenges for the data center fit-out including low floor-to-floor height, limited structural capacity of the... Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The Media Laboratory was formed in 1980 out of the work of MIT’s Architectural Machine Group and was built upon the seminal work of the faculty, which included a variety of research disciplines including cognition, learning, music, graphic design, video and holography. The lab has pioneered a research environment where academia and industry collaborate and has cultivated a culture built around cross disciplinary research groups much in the spirit and vitality of architectural “ateliers.” The success of the school now depends on a major expansion project that provides additional space for expanding research as well as spaces that will support and intensify the interaction among the Media Lab community. The new Media Lab Building provides... More
