Portal House

A Toronto couple has opposite tastes: he is an enthusiast of tenebrous minimalism, and she a lover of bright French country kitchens. They wanted to renovate their home of ten years, to streamline and organize their books and belongings. The architect proposed a dual design with deep oak tones along the lower half of the rooms, and bright whites above, merging the two tastes to create denlike coziness. Scott Norsworthy Scott Norsworthy The design hinges on ‘ribbons’ flowing through the space, guiding the motion through the rooms. The ribbons curve in areas where sharp corners would not fit, or would stop the flow of movement. In the kitchen, a tight space, all lower cabinet corners are softened with curved ends, allow... Central Park West Penthouse

Studio ST Architects renovated a pre-war Manhattan penthouse apartment to accommodate a multi-generational, Asia-based family and highlight the wrap-around views of Central Park. Studio ST Architects collaborated with interior designer Atelier + Concept to create a classy and fresh interior which mixes “high” and “low” cost elements. Angela Hau & Alex Krauss The apartment layout was reconfigured to create a clear and simple circulation, separating the public spaces from the three bedrooms and creating an en-suite primary bathroom. A new foyer was introduced—clad in antique mirrors and De Gournay wallpaper—which leads to the long hallway that acts as the apartment spine, punctuated by a series of... More

Apartamento Pedroso Alvarenga

As the years go by, customs and living arrangements change. Previously, the floor plans of residential apartments were highly compartmentalized, with various separate rooms divided by walls, a room for staff, numerous bathrooms, among other distinctive features. However, increasingly, the newer generations seek more open and connected spaces with fewer obstacles and a lively atmosphere. This is how we conceptualized this renovation project together with the young couple who owns this apartment in the Itaim neighborhood. Pedro Napolitano Prata With 110m² of space, we proposed the demolition of all the walls in the social or common areas, integrating them into a single, fluid, and cozy space. Where there used to be a living room, d... More

10 Residential Kitchen Countertops

Countertops are durable work surfaces that work in tandem with cabinetry and appliances to complete a kitchen. They are essential design elements with an expansive array of colour, texture, and material options available on the market. While regularly part of inventories offered by kitchen suppliers, countertops can also be purchased directly from manufacturers.   Users may require different levels of technical performance from countertops, though they typically seek materials of high density and low porosity to resist staining and the absorption of moisture, grease, and oils. Hardness, self-cleaning, and resistance to shock, scratching, acid, cleaning agents, and bacteria are other typical characteristics of high-quality products. T... More

Pied-à-terre Keizersgracht

This Pied-à-terre apartment had to contain a multifunctional room in the middle that is at once part of the living room, a study and a guest room. It’s a very deep space which has the unique feature of having windows on three sides, but not a lot of them. It also has the entrance all the way at the back-corner.  Caption As the position of the entrance made it necessary to make a pretty long hallway, we made a couple of interventions to alleviate the longitudinal space. First of all we treated the division between the hallway and the rooms behind it as an architectural object. It is materialized as a furniture piece, differently from the outer shell of the apartment, thus emphasizing the apartment as one hole. We also... More
