Fiddes Architects were approached by the client to provide a design for a bespoke ancillary building located in his grounds to provide a space for him to store and maintain his car & motorbike collection and include a home office space.. The client made clear his passion for industrial design and aesthetics and was keen that the garage should be an extension of this passion and become a space in which he spends his spare time tinkering and fettling with his Land Rover and motorcycle collection. This stunning new build was awarded a Commendation award 2019 by The aberdeen Society of Architects. This design was contextually driven from the surrounding building forms and materials. The Wooden House lies in an area called "Gellan", Banchory in the beautiful Royal Deeside, Scotland. The design incorporates elements reminiscent of older agricultural buildings common in the area. The dwelling comprises of natural cladding materials with both a rusty Cor-Ten and grey corrugated roof. An L-shaped plan provides generous accommodation and living spaces whilst keeping the buildings footprint to a minimum and allowing for a secluded area to be formed in the garden. Exuberance-free, the home reflects Latvians’ reserved and modest nature. No element is purely decorative, so as not to take away from the rugged beauty of the landscape. The area is a renowned world Heritage Site and considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom with its remarkable selection of mountain fynbos.
