Architects in this present competition have to balance between the square’s grandeur and the glory of the Olympic Games, between the ephemeral duration of the Games (they last only for a few weeks) and the timeless square. Trafalgar Square has a monumental axis that joins Nelson’s statute with the steps that lead to the National Gallery walking along the fountains. This axis constitutes the movement path for hundreds of visitors of Trafalgar square everyday. Placing our construction on that axis we symbolise the integration of the great importance of the Games in the life and history of London. Make’s shortlisted competition scheme for the Aquatics Centre houses a world class venue for the London 2012 Olympics within a dramatic gateway building at the entrance to the Olympic Park in Stratford, East London. The scheme makes ingenious use of the topography of the immediate area, using the structure to manage a drop in ground level at the Park entrance. Two pools are sunk into the ground on either side of the main entrance to the site, linked at basement levels by a training pool and sports science facilities. Make won the initial competition to design the Handball Arena for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2007, and construction is now complete on the highly sustainable and flexible venue.As its purpose will change in legacy mode, the space has been designed to be fully adaptable.
